JCB is preparing to open a new excavator and backhoe plant as it looks to combat heavy levies on imported machinery in Brazil.
The UK manufacturer secured a 1,000 machine order, its biggest ever in the country, from the government in May and has invested in a 350,000 sq ft plant to service the market.
“We are about to open a new excavator and backhoe factory near Sao Paulo in July for the South American market,” spokesman Nigel Chell told CMME. “That market used to be so unstable but it is stable enough to do direct business now.
“The driver there was you have to manufacture otherwise you have to pay punative prices to import. There is a lot happening there.”
