Muscat airport gets steel terminal structures
Steel structures represent the first shipment of these structures to the new facility
Installation of the structures will begin on September 22, ministry officials say.
The Omani government has announced the arrival of the steel structures for the new terminal at Muscat International Airport at Port Sultan Qaboos (PSQ).
Weighing 6,534 tonnes, the steel structures represent the first shipment of these structures for the new facility, built to handle 12 million passengers annually.
Further expansions planned in three subsequent phases will ultimately increase the airport’ capacity to 24, 36 and 48 million passengers.
COWI, in a joint venture with Larsen Architects and Copenhagen Airports, are principal consultants on the expansion of the airport.
The joint venture will carry out planning, designing, and supervision of the building works.
The Sultanate’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Dr Ahmed bin Mohamed al Futaisi said that 30,000 tonnes of steel will go into the new terminal.
Installation of these structures is expected to begin on September 22, from the north side of the terminal, which will house the departure and arrival lounges, among other facilities.
The project is slated for completion by 2014.
