Designer appointed for Dubai’s Burj 2020, world’s tallest commercial tower
Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture chosen to design planned skyscraper in JLT district
Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS + GG) has been chosen as the designer of the Burj 2020 tower, which is set to be the world’s tallest commercial tower.
The tall-buildings specialist was appointed by Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, the master developer of the Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) district, where the Burj 2020 will be located.
While the height of the tower is yet to be revealed, the Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat has ranked New York’s One World Trade Centre as the world’s tallest commercial tower at 541 metres.
AS + GG has previously designed the Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia and it also worked on the design of the Burj Khalifa when it was a part of the Chicago-based Skidmore Owings + Merrill practice.
DMCC has also appointed Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG) to create the masterplan for the surrounding Burj 2020 district. The design firm has worked on a number of projects in the region, including The Atlantis The Palm and Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Palace.
“AS + GG and WATG come with a wealth of global destination and tower design expertise,” said DMCC executive chairman Ahmed Bin Sulayem.
“Designing a world-class destination of this scale will set new levels of efficiency and urban sustainability and we are confident that our partners, in delivering the Burj 2020 District and tower, will create a new address for the global business community of the future, right here in Dubai.”
The master plan for the district surrounding Burj 2020 will comprise of 1.3 million square metres of buildings, including commercial, retail and hotel space. DMCC has previously said that a 360 degree observation deck will be built at the top of the Burj 2020, making it the highest in the world.
Turner International Middle East, the North American construction services company, was last year appointed as project manager for the Burj 2020 District development.
As part of its portfolio, Turner has delivered the current three tallest towers in the world, including Burj Khalifa.
“Opportunities to work on world-class developments of this scale do not present themselves often and we are honoured to be part of DMCC’s Burj 2020 District project,” said Ali Odeh, chairman and CEO of Turner International Middle East, at the time of the appointment in September 2014.
“We are committed and ready to take the project to the next level by offering our project management services to the development of what will no doubt be a world class commercial district of the future.”
