The Sharjah Police department has urged construction companies in the emirate to enforce onsite safety standards following the death of two construction workers on August 27, 2014.

According to local media reports, the workers were killed after they fell from a building under construction on King Faisal Road. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the workers were pronounced dead at the Kuwaiti Hospital and Al Qassimi Hospital respectively.

Sharjah Police confirmed that they were investigating the incident and said that it was yet to be determined whether onsite safety measures were being followed on the day of the accident.

The incident is the latest in a number of labour related emergencies reported in the emirate this year. In an incident in February, a 43 year old worker fell to his death from an under construction building in the Al Mamzar area. According to officials, the man fell to the ground after losing his balance.

“The labourer was not wearing a safety helmet which led to a severe head injury and death. Wearing a safety harness while operating at height is another mandatory requirement as per the law,” a police spokesperson said at the time.

“Construction companies are held responsible for negligence as they must ensure labourers strictly adhere to safety rules and regulations,” the official added, urging all construction companies to enforce safety measures on their project sites.
