Fire at Dubai Mall days after launch of fire safety campaign

Middle East’s largest shopping mall evacuated after fire scare

Shoppers at the Dubai Mall had to evacuate the building after a fire was reported at a second-floor restaurant earlier today.

Local media reported that visitors to the world’s second largest shopping mall were asked to leave after white smoke was seen close to the ice rink and indoor fountain.

The fire reportedly started close to midday and by 12.20 civil defence and emergency vehicles were on the scene.

A tweet by the Dubai Media Office on twitter reported: “A minor fire in one of the restaurants at Dubai Mall has been brought under control.”

The incident comes just two days after Dubai Civil Defence launched a two-week campaign to promote the use of fire extinguishers and the prevention of fire hazards.

At the campaign launch, Major General Rashid Thani Al Matroushi, acting Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Civil Defence told Gulf News:  “Presence of mind and timely action can not only save lives.”
