Meydan sues Arabtec-WCT JV over Nad Al Sheba racecourse

The $952.8m legal action comes after the cancellation of the original construction contract from three years ago, which was due to construction delays, Meydan says

Dubai-based construction firm Arabtec and Malaysian contractor WCT have been sued by Meydan over the construction of the Nad Al-Sheba race course that hosts the Dubai World Cup.

The $952.8m legal action follows the cancellation of the original construction contract three years ago. WCTwon the order in 2007 to build the development with Arabtec Construction, but Meydan cancelled the contract in January 2009, citing construction delays.

At that time, the WCT-Arabtec JV had completed about 65% of the job, which included the construction of the main building, external and infrastructure works, and had appointed nominated subcontractors to undertake some portions of the job on behalf of the JV company.

Subsequently, the joint venture launched an arbitration action against Meydan, alleging breach of contract. Meydan has responded with a civil suit in the Dubai Courts, arguing that the original arbitration had expired. WCT said the civil suit was “frivolous and without merit.”
